Monotype Imaging Adds Self-hosting to its Fonts.com Web Fonts Service
Monotype Imaging launched its Fonts.com Web Fonts service last September, differentiating it from competitors in several ways. First, the weight of its library of exclusive classics from the Monotype, Linotype and ITC collections is huge, featuring such hallowed names as Helvetica, Frutiger and Univers. But beyond these, the entire offering of more than 10,000 fonts is... well, rather overwhelming, for those of us used to thinking that specifying Georgia was daring (no more font stacks to wrestle with, hooray!). It's also surprising that more than 3,000 of the fonts can be freely used on sites that receive no more than 25,000 page views per month.
While the free offering is impressive, most of us are more a fit for the two paid subscription tiers: standard and professional. Both provide access to the entire collection and include page view allowance options that start at $10 and $100 per month, respectively. The professional level also allows subscribers to download up to 50 fonts per month, so designers can use them both on the web and in traditional desktop application environments, without having to pay for additional font licenses. Also of interest to design pros is the "virtually instant" display of pages using the webfonts, even when employing Chinese, Japanese or Korean fonts, thanks to new patent-pending technology (more than 40 languages are supported).
While the Fonts.com web fonts continue to be hosted on a global distribution network of servers, professional subscribers now have the option of hosting the fonts themselves. Customers download a kit that steps them through the hosting process, selecting the fonts they need, with CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) code provided for rendering in all major browsers. Updated code will be made available ongoingly to ensure compatibility with future browser versions. In addition, any enhancements that Monotype Imaging applies to its fonts, such optimizing a font to improve legibility, will also be available to self-hosting customers.
