Rare summer rain storm dampens Sacramento, region
Rain fell in Sacramento today, as predicted, providing significant soakings in some parts of the region.
The National Weather Service on its website reported light rain and fog and a temperature of 61 degrees in Sacramento, Davis and Elk Grove shortly before 2 p.m. Showers and possible thunderstorms are forecast until 11 p.m.
Forecasters said the amount of rainfall will vary, depending on whether an area is hit by a thunderstorm. Over the past six hours, 0.24 inches of rain had been reported in Woodland and 0.20 inches at Sacramento International Airport.
A lake wind advisory is in effect until 11 p.m. for the Lake Tahoe area and much of the Sierra, including the cities of South Lake Tahoe and Truckee. Southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts of 40 to 45 mph are forecast. Wave heights of two to four feet are forecast for Lake Tahoe, and small boats are advised to stay off the lake until conditions improve.
The temperature at Lake Tahoe at shortly before 2 p.m. was 68 degrees.
The rare summer rain is due to a "very dynamic and cool" low-pressure system, the National Weather Service said, a system expected to be short-lived, bringing the chance of about a half inch of rain to Sacramento this afternoon before moving east.
The unusually strong late-season weather system will also result in a big swing in temperatures. Between today and Sunday, a 25-degree difference in daytime high temperatures is forecast.
The high today is expected to be 76 degrees. The high on Sunday is expected to be 101.
Monday, the Fourth of July, is expected to be sparkler-hot: 100 degrees.

Today: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 76. South southeast wind 7 to 10 mph becoming west. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Tonight: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 11 p.m., then showers likely. Low around 55. West wind between 12 and 15 mph becoming light. Winds could gust as high as 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Wednesday: A 20 percent chance of showers before 11 a.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 76. South wind between 7 and 9 mph.
Wednesday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 56. Southwest wind between 5 and 7 mph.
