MOBILE, Alabama --- Jessica Chavez Price wears many hats — many, many hats.
Chances are, she made them herself using an array of fabric, colorful feathers, beads and anything else that will lend her creations that unmistakable je ne sais quoi . Others wear her hats as well, along with her hair fascinators and distinctive “art dresses” that pay homage to Boticelli and Gustav Klimt.
Price is certainly known to her loyal clientele at Allure Studio . Few of them will allow another stylist to touch their hair.
Anyone who has attended an arts event downtown in the past 2 years has experienced her artistry, most frequently at Blue Velvet Studio and Cathedral Square Gallery on upper Dauphin Street.
Price, 31, has added a touch of glamour to the local arts scene, which needed a little more zip in its doo-dah.
“We’re fueling the fire,” she says, “pushing the boundaries a little. It’s like this underground of art that’s fuming up. . . . It’s very different and unexpected, and I like that. I like having the hell surprised out of me on a daily basis. Makes life more adventurous.”
'New Retro' describes her style
Price is no Mad Hatter on a mission, however. She is also a dancer, model, arts activist and volunteer. Like her mother, artist Loran Chavez, she takes volunteerism seriously, having participated in fundraisers for Alabama tornado victims, Ronald McDonald House, the Red Cross and many other causes. She does have a style all her own. Call it the New Retro, whatever. It works for her.
She also has energy to burn. Many of the artist’s noteworthy collaborations involve Blue Velvet Studio and owner/director Karen Cassidy, who describes Price as “one of the great gems of this town.”
For the black-light show, Price created Squishy the Jellyfish, which a patron bought for her 13-year-old daughter. She also created the BVS “man-cave,” a droll attempt to draw more men into the gallery.
The man-cave featured an easy chair (with TV remote), beer, a wall-mounted deer head and other man-friendly amenities.
“We had to start kicking people out,” she says. “It made me laugh.”
“Jess has talents in many areas, which is one of the things that draws me to her,” Cassidy says.
“And always quick to bounce ideas around, like Margaret Warren. Those people are very important for someone like me to find as they stand out above most artists.
