Going against the grain: Farm boy turned lawyer turned furniture maker

Dave Stine reports to work by walking from his 1871 farmhouse in rural Dow to a 60-by-60-foot barn, where he makes furniture out of trees he cuts himself.

It's a far cry from from his former job as an attorney handling estates, wills, trusts and probate cases near Washington, D.C.

"I'm not cut out to sit behind a desk," said Dave, 40, who practiced law for a year before trading suits and ties for jeans and suspenders.

He moved back to his native Jersey County in 2002 and expanded his part-time business, David Stine Woodworking, into a full-time career.

Dave specializes in one-of-a-kind tables, beds, desks and benches made of walnut, oak, cherry, maple, cypress, hackberry and other trees harvested on his family's land.

He sells them at art shows all over the country and through his website at stinewoodworking.com.

"I'm not just cranking out designs from a pattern book," he said. "Each piece (of furniture) is an individual interpretation of what I think a piece of wood wants to be."

Dave doesn't alter the natural color, shape or grain. He adapts to it.

If a customer wants a dark piece of furniture, Dave uses dark wood, such as black walnut, instead of staining white oak or maple.

"We're celebrating the character of the wood," he said. "All those scars and cracks and healed wounds ... That's what gives wood character, just like people."

Like-minded customers

The philosophy attracted customer Matthew Wells, who met Dave at a furniture show in New York City a few years ago.

Matthew eventually ordered an oak bench, a walnut dining room table and a companion shelf for his home on Shelter Island. He even traveled to Dow, about 35 northwest of Belleville.

"It gave me a chance to look at the various trees that were available (to make the table)," said Wells, 62, a automotive toy designer.

"I studied furniture design in college, and I've done it in my professional career, so it was nice to sit down and talk to Dave about his operation."

Another customer who has visited Dow is Chris Eigeman, an actor best known for the Whit Stillman films "Metropolitan," "Barcelona" and "The Last Days of Disco."

He has bought five pieces of Dave's furniture, including a 15-foot-long dining room table, a media cabinet, umbrella and cane holder, coat rack and side board.

"(His work) occupies this really, really sweet spot of functional design and sincere artistic creation," said Chris, 46, who divides his time between his New York City apartment and farmhouse in upstate New York.
