Though I had been to Italy (Sicily — Catania ) twice before and have also heard about the mafiosi there, Catania is really fantastic and retains the flavour Greek, Roman and Middle Age architecture. There is more to Sicily than the mafiosi. Sicilians have a good taste for accepting different kinds of music and culture. At the Brass Jazz Music Festival , I presented a concept of Indo-Mediterranean project and performed with a famous Octo-base flute player, Anna Ventimiglia , and the Afro-Cuban percussionist, Fulvio Farkas. I wish to know about the Mediterranean music and play with musicians from that place.


No, I played with my traditional instrument — santoor (Shatatantri Veena which has 100 strings) with tabla accompaniment. At the Tarab Festival, musicians from different countries performed traditional forms of music with their traditional instruments. So, I performed North Indian classical music with traditional instrument. They liked the sound of santoor very much. There I met with an Arabic santoor player and had a long discussion on the basic difference between Arabic santoor and Indian santoor and the santoor baaz.


Yes, I have plans to jam with two different musicians I met on this tour. They are really great. One is Orazio Mujeri — the famous saxophone player from Palermo (Sicily). The other musician is the extraordinary Moroccan singer — Laila Lamrini. We are going to collaborate very soon on different projects. I plan to start the saxophone project in October. In March 2012, I plan to collaborate with Laila.


Of course, there are advantages of being from a musician's family. My father, Asoke Chatterjee, is a famous footballer of the 60s. He played for India as well as Mohun Bagan, East Bengal for several years. But I chose Indian classical music and not football. So, the decision of taking music as a career depends on the mind of the musician and not his family background. Music works like a drug. If there is musical hunger and enough courage to accept a challenge, there will never be a dearth of opportunities.

The Hunchback Flute Player Named Kokopelli

Kokopelli, the little “hunch-back” flute player as commonly known to many, has been around for centuries. He is regarded as the universal symbol of fertility for all life, inclusive of hopes, dreams, crops and love and is often referred to as the fertility deity.

Some people believe that he would announce his arrival to the locals, by playing a flute as he traveled through, looking for women to impregnate, which made him well known for the fertility symbol that he represented. Not only was he an excellent flutist, he was most definitely well known as an excellent lover, which was far more important to the ladies in the villages that he would frequent. And the story describes him as a ladies dream if a woman was lucky enough to meet him.

Ask around and you’ll probably discover that his goal was simply to attract as many women as he possibly could, as he had one simple thing on his mind! Whenever he would arrive into a village, he would always be dancing and playing his flute not only his own heart’s content, but also to his lady followers, that couldn’t wait until he arrived into their village.

There are various meanings about what this humpback flute player really stands for or means. Some believe that he is carrying different items on his back in the pictures that are represented of this famous flute-player. One thing is for sure, though. You will always see Kokopelli with a humpback while playing his flute.

Kokopelli is known as the hunch back flute player and sometimes the deity flute player who, put mildly, had an infatuation for women. It was no secret that Kokopelli would do whatever he needed to do for him to have the opportunity to impregnate another woman.

If you want even more Kokopelli goods, you will definitely find your share of things to buy with his face and flute proudly displayed at any of the local swap meets, as referred to in Arizona. Other parts of the country may refer to swap meets as flea markets.
