Ride To Conquer Cancer - Blog - CENTURY 21 Advantage
I was one of 2,280 cyclists that took part in this years event. The combined total dollars raised by those riders was $8.6 Million dollars, benefiting the Alberta Cancer Foundation . The Alberta Cancer Foundation is the only charity responsible for supporting care at the Cross Cancer Institute, Tom Baker Cancer Centre and Alberta's 15 associate and community cancer centres.
If you've haven't heard of the ride or know to much about it, I encourage you to learn more. It is truly epic. A 200 km cycling journey into the foothills of Alberta. The views are fantastic.
The support along the way was superb. I can't describe how nervous I was yet excited to begin the ride. I had never rode my bike 100 km or 200 km before. I had no idea what to expect. I wasn't sure on the support systems in place along the way. I had a guide book sent to me, some emails, and a website for information. I can't say enough about the great team of volunteers at every step of the journey. Water, Gatorade, food, snacks, lunches, tents, medical assistance, and more was available.
While I entered as an individual and rode solo, I wasn't alone. I was part of a great big family. If I stopped riders passing would holler "You OK?". A passing support truck would slow and ask if I needed anything. On Sunday when it was cold, wet and windy I was asked "Do you want to sit in the truck and warm up?". Fortunately I didn't need any assistance like that. I kept thinking this is tough, this is hard, but not as hard as fighting Cancer. I could have quit, I could have threw in the towel and told myself "I did more than others", but then I would think "No, those fighting Cancer don't have the luxury of taking a day off from fighting Cancer because it's hard".
It's not about winning a race or coming in first for the Cancer Ride it's about finishing.
