State Reps. Earl Poleski, Mike Shirkey vote for reform to teacher tenure law

The state House approved a series of changes to the state's teacher tenure law this afternoon. Among other things, the bill package would make it easier to get rid of ineffective teachers and add to the length of time for a teacher to attain tenured status.

State Reps. Earl Poleski, R-Spring Arbor Township, and Mike Shirkey, R- Clark Lake, voted in favor of the changes.

"This reform package will help ensure the continued excellence in our local public school system and keep our most effective teachers in the classroom where they belong. Our children deserve the very best chance at success in life, and that means keeping successful teachers in our classrooms," Poleski said in a statement. "Jackson County is blessed with wonderful teachers who are top-notch educators. This legislative package makes students the priority by rewarding excellence in our teachers while establishing processes for addressing ineffectiveness."

Shirkey said school administrators in the past have been reluctant to evaluate teachers because the hurdles and costs associated with removing bad teachers was so high they felt it was a lost cause.

With this package of bills, Shirkey said the process has been streamlined and those excuses have been eliminated.

"Children, teachers and taxpayers," will be helped by this bill, he said, noting the package received "some significant, broad based Democratic support."

The bill package — which critics say it's just another example of the Republican-led legislature piling on teachers — now heads to the Senate.

As we continue down this slippery slope of one-party big business friendly government in Michigan, I will give you a quick history quote for free, and with it a word of warning.

This is a man who worked hard every single day, and sacrificed for his family by spending the best years of his life cooking in the foundry. He put money into his company owned pension plan, thinking it was safe and a promise given to him as an agreement for the 56-60 hours a week he put in year after year. Unfortunately, that was something that was not to be.
