Getting Away... Or Not.

My husband Darrin and I celebrated our anniversary this past Saturday. We decided to spend a few nights (two to be exact) away right outside of North Conway. Thanks to a well-timed email from “Living Social” we were able to find a cute little bed and breakfast. We begged Auntie Cat and Nana to watch the kids for a few nights, and we were off.

Well, we were almost off. I think every parent has experienced that even the best-laid plans are subject to “child-induced” cracks.

I guess I can’t lay the blame entirely with my children. I can blame the weather too. We delayed our trip for a baseball game. The weather postponed the little league schedule by a few days, and instead of a Saturday afternoon game, we were scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. game on Sunday afternoon - the exact time of check-in three and a half hours north of Norwood.

There was no discussion. We just automatically put our trip aside, and went to watch Ben’s baseball game. I have to brag for a moment because the Rays are the major league town champions! So of course this exciting moment in the childhood of our son, was worth the wait, but I did start thinking.

I think every parent must get to a moment when they wonder, “When did I stop being the boss?” The answer is, “Well, at the birth of your child.” And the thought goes further, “When did I stop minding?”

We spent the long car ride talking about the game, and the team, and the kids in general. We wondered how “the baby” would handle our being away. We wondered if Ben would be well prepared to head off to basketball camp. We discussed Max heading off to Gloucester for the day. We worried about what they would eat for dinner, and if there was enough children’s Tylenol in the house. When we finally had exhausted all of our “child-induced” angst (somewhere around the Hampton tolls), we became quiet. Our trip was booked, our bags were packed, and we were on our way, but would we be able to relax? Is it possible to spend time away from the kids, and just relax?

We started an awkward conversation about what we would do when we finally arrived. Due to the game delay, we were several hours behind schedule, and several hours behind dinner! We would be arriving in North Conway at around 9:30 p.m. We decided that we would check in and then quickly find a restaurant for a burger and a beer. Sounds like a cool, relaxed thing to do on an adult vacation, doesn’t it? I started to say, “But we have to get up early....” I trailed off realizing that no, we didn’t have to get up early. We would not be subject to Grace’s 6:00 a.m. wake-up call. We did not have to drive the boys anywhere, or find their socks, or shorts, or bathing suits.

Cruel weather for NSW power

The biggest lesson of all is that you cannot produce a good energy management outcome without a roadmap. Carr knew this, but completely dropped the ball – his successors never went back to the central element for energy supply management: a plan.

Weather Lesson Plans

Ending: 1 Min

That wraps up this lesson plan and where I teach, the school year. For our first graders, they’ve learned a lot. In addition to the weather, they’ve learned about fruit, animals, shopping, different countries, the Three Little Pigs and so much more. We’ve also made tons of cards together and played lots of games. And while typically, in Japan, the weather doesn’t vary much in March (at least not in Kagoshima), with the coming “season” of hanami (flower viewing), the weather is on everyone’s mind, making this lesson very appropriate. Good Luck in the Classroom !
