Hamilton House concert series kicks off on July 3 in South Berwick
SOUTH BERWICK, Maine — Historic New England is pleased to announce this year's line up for the popular Sundays in the Garden Concert Series. Concerts are held on Sundays in July at 4 p.m. at Hamilton House in South Berwick.
The beautiful gardens and sweeping view of the Salmon Falls River provide a picture perfect setting for these relaxed late-afternoon concerts. Pack your picnic basket and lawn chair and come prepared to enjoy some of the Seacoast's most popular musical performers.
"We're very excited about this year's line up," said site manager Peggy Wishart, "and to be able to extend the series, adding a concert on the extra Sunday that falls in July this year. The fifth concert, performed by Joyce Andersen, will be presented in partnership with The Great Works Regional Land Trust. Proceeds from the show will benefit both organizations. Please come out and show your support!"
Harvey Reid kicks off the series on July 3. A well loved local musician, Reid has performed extensively, garnering national recognition as one of the true treasures of American acoustic music. Reid's music includes a range of influences from folk to rockabilly and a vast repertoire of traditional and contemporary songs.
On July 10 concert goers will enjoy South Berwick's own Susie Burke accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Kent Allyn for an afternoon of folk and popular standards. Burke is a dynamic and versatile singer, loved for her skill as an interpreter of songs of the heart. Allyn is known for his range on piano, guitar, and bass. Together the duo is a must see.
New to the concert series, but well loved in the Seacoast, is guitarist and singer-songwriter Martin England. England's latest album, Razed and Reconstructed, was nominated for Album of the Year with the song "Do What the Man with the Gun Says" taking Single of the Year honors at this year's Spotlight on the Arts Awards in Portsmouth. England will perform his special mix of folk, roots rock, and country with special guest Andy Happel on fiddle, July 17.
Returning to the garden on July 24 is Cormac McCarthy. McCarthy is established as one of New England's finest singer-songwriters. Two-time nominee for the Boston Music Awards, McCarthy tours nationally sharing his delightful humor and performing his finely crafted songs.

Buck Norris sings “Tall Tall Trees” written by Roger Miller and sung by various artists including Alan Jackson. Roger Dean Miller (January 2, 1936 October 25, 1992) was an American singer, songwriter and musician, best known for his mid-1960s country/pop hits such as “King of the Road”, “Dang Me,” and “England Swings.” He also wrote the music and lyrics for the Tony-award winning Broadway musical Big River (1985). Roger Miller, the youngest of three boys, was born in Fort Worth, Texas, to Laudene Holt Miller (mother) and father Jean Miller. Jean died when Roger was only a year old, and he was subsequently sent to live with his aunt and uncle, Elmer and Armelia Miller, in Erick, Oklahoma. Miller had a lonely and unhappy childhood. Heavily influenced by the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday nights and the Light Crust Doughboys on Fort Worth radio, he desperately wanted to be a singer-songwriter. When he was seventeen, he stole a guitar, but turned himself in and chose to join the Army rather than go to jail. He later quipped, “My education was Korea, Clash of ’52.” Upon leaving the Army, he went to Nashville to work on his music career. In 1959 he wrote his first number-one song, “Billy Bayou” recorded by Jim Reeves. Although usually grouped with country music singers, Miller’s unique style defies easy classification. He had a string of pop hits in the 1960s, and also his own TV show in 1966. Many of his recordings were humorous novelty songs with whimsical lyrics, coupled with …
