Report: Historics
A year after its launch, Historics at Brooklands seems to be getting more and more into the stream of all things American and quirky: for, at its 19 July summer sale - taking place at monsoon-like humidity levels and a tropical deluge soaking the carpets inside the marquee - a bright red 1967 Pontiac GTO was easily spotted with its faux supercharger in cheeky plastic sticking out of the bonnet. The American theme did not stop at the Pontiac, though sales did: stars-and-stripes muscle came from a sunny-looking 1971 Chevrolet El Camino SS (bid to £12,750 but not sold, despite the offer being within the £10k-15k estimate range); a 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 (Recreation), with a 7.2 V8 engine and restoration bills totalling £130k, unsold after being offered £66.5k; and a 1965 Ford Mustang 289 Convertible (at £15k, quite a way from the £20k wanted by the seller). At least fifty per cent of the vehicles auctioned fell short of expectations, but Historics had a trick up its sleeve: with the auction in full swing, members of staff located either the would-be buyer or the willing seller to persuade relevant parties. As a result, the auctioneer was discreetly handed over numerous notes turning not-quite-there offers into a sale before the end of the auction. Exotica were dutifully represented by a generous dollop of Italians: not one, but two 1992 Lancia Delta Evoluziones (one sold at £14k, the other – at £12,250k - did not); the only Ferrari was a 365 GT (2+2), offered a whisker under the lower estimate of £68k; and a trio of beautiful Alfa Romeos, two of which sparked a fierce bidding war between room and a mysterious ‘phone bidder, perhaps Italian. The 1964 Alfa 2600 Spider in excellent condition fetched £28k, and the baby-Montreal 1973 Alfa Romeo GT1600 Junior Zagato (now with a 1750 engine) got £11.5k. And talking about Zagato, a tribute to the rare, seven-figure Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato, a 1961 example by Shapecraft, sold for £141K plus commission. Historics’ recent 100% sale success with the Marvel Collection of pick-ups and commercial vehicles of the ‘30s must have encouraged the team to beef up their books with similar models, including a Bedford TK Vincent Horse Box (£4k), a 1965 Commer Cob Van (with a Brabham 1725cc Alpine engine, to surprise folks in white Ford vans at traffic lights), gone at £3k; and a smart two-tone Australian 1954 Standard Vanguard pick-up (£11.5).
1967 Pontiac GTO For Sale in Charlotte, North Carolina | Old Car ...
This is it-the car that started it all, the Pontiac GTO. As soon as John DeLorean figured out how to work around GM's rules about certain engines in certain cars, the horsepower races were on. By 1967, every major manufacturer was in the game, but the GTO was still the king of the hill in terms of performance and style, and cars like this convertible are the reason why. With a matching-numbers 400 cubic inch V8 under the hood, options like factory air and a rare FM radio, as well as a folding top, this Goat is all about summertime fun. Originally a California car, and restored about nine years ago, this GTO is a solid, clean car that presents well both mechanically and cosmetically. It has been driven, of course, because it's awfully hard to resist a car like this when the sun is shining, but overall it remains handsome and attention-grabbing. During restoration, this car was refinished in Dark Tahoe Turquoise Metallic, which was the closest possible match to the original code L Mariner Turquoise Metallic color. There's evidence that the workmanship was first rate when the car was restored, and it's a professional cut and buff away from being a one car parade today. The chrome is still crisp and bright, with correct GTO mesh grilles up front and bright stainless rocker moldings which are in excellent condition. This is definitely one of those cars where a weekend or two of elbow grease will pay BIG dividends on the show field or at resale time. Originally equipped with a code 235 black bench seat interior, this one looks far fresher with a set of bright Parchment seat covers. Not only do they complement the turquoise bodywork better than black, but they're a lot friendlier in the sun, which is where you're going to spend a lot of time in this convertible. Of course, the color change means new door panels and a new back seat cover were also part of the restoration, and the items that remain black are correct, even for Parchment. That means new black carpets, and the black dash pad was restored to original condition. The gauges appear original, including the optional tachometer with adjustable redline needle. FM radio was a big deal in 1967, and having an AM/FM radio in your car was nothing short of miraculous back then. Today, you'll appreciate being able to listen to your favorite music without needing an adapter or some kind of aftermarket radio to do so.
