VISTA: Students learn history through rock 'n' roll
Some high school students are naturally interested in history, while others care more about guitar riffs and drum beats.
A teacher in Vista is trying to reach the latter group with a class that focuses on history through the lens of rock ‘n' roll.
Teresa Gerent, who teaches history at Rancho Buena Vista High School, started the yearlong elective three years ago. The class focuses on the social and political history of music from the blues of the early 1900s that influenced rock 'n' roll to modern hip-hop.
"It really is a history class that's kind of cloaked in rock 'n' roll," Gerent said.
The content is focused mostly on foreign policy and civil rights issues between 1950 and 2000.
The assignments require students to work on their reading, writing and speaking skills with projects that include presenting an oral history report, examining song lyrics and writing a protest song.
Gerent, a lifelong music fan, said she came up with the idea for the class after noticing that some students had a hard time connecting to history.
"I think it's because things aren't relevant for them," she said of more typical history courses.
It took her several years to plan the curriculum and get all the necessary approvals. The Vista Unified School District board of trustees confirmed the course in 2008.
Though there are similar college courses, Gerent said she hasn't heard of any other schools in California that offer the class.
Gerent said she thinks the class will help improve test scores by increasing students' interest in history and helping them connect to content in other classes through music.
Alex Markey ---- a recent graduate who took the class this year ---- said she learned a lot about civil rights through the class, which humanized history for her.
"A lot of history classes, they just throw out facts at you," she said. "With music, you feel what's going on."
Students are able to bring in and analyze their own favorite songs as part of the course.
Through other students' presentations, Markey said she learned to appreciate new genres of music, especially the blues. Gerent said she has also discovered new artists through her students.
Tony Modenessi ---- another recent graduate in the class this year ---- said he was inspired to do well because he felt a connection to the content, particularly when it came to his favorite genres, heavy metal and punk.
