Even without the crying jag, it's clear from Ty Mylnar's body language that Matt, the character he plays in Proxy Theatre Company's “Red Light Winter,” is having a rough time.

The encounter takes on deep significance for Matt and Christina; it doesn't make a dent in Davis' world. Matt becomes so obsessed with Christina that, a year later, he can still recall the tiniest details. She, too, is fixated on that evening, because she falls for Davis. Even before Christina reveals her feelings for him verbally, Krause makes them clear — her eyes linger on him, sometimes even when Matt is talking to her.

Rapp's play digs around in the complexity of friendship and romance. It's challenging territory, and director Aaron Aguilar and his gifted cast navigate it well. The actors' performances are rooted in truth and there is real chemistry between them.

There's some nudity in the show and there are a couple of sex scenes — one of them a brutal incident that's appropriately hard to watch. All of that material is handled matter-of-factly.

The show is a terrific launch for Proxy, a new troupe consisting mostly of Trinity University grads and a few current students. And it makes one eager to see what's next from them.
