Online delivery gets software outside the box

I hope you're not too fond of buying software in shrink-wrapped boxes, because those days are numbered. I predict that soon, buying software on a disc will be nothing more than a quaint memory, like 8-track or VHS tapes.

Apple's Mac App Store is a hit. With over a million apps downloaded on its first day of operation alone, a growing inventory of useful and fun Mac apps, and huge installed base (the Mac App Store app is included with Mac OS X versions 10.6.6 and later), it's a force to be reckoned with.

But Apple isn't the only game in town anymore. Amazon.com's new Mac Software Store doesn't have a huge selection of downloadable Mac software yet, but you'll find some very good deals there.

Or check out Bodega ( www.appbodega.com ), an independent Mac software store with a terrific selection of programs you won't find at the Apple or Amazon stores, delivered via the free Bodega app, which is quite slick.

So competition is one sure sign that electronic distribution of Mac software is the next big thing, but here are three more reasons I think boxed software will soon go the way of the dodo:

• Downloadable software is less expensive. For example, the iLife and iWork suites are $49 and $79 respectively in a retail box. Today, the Mac App Store sells iMovie, iPhoto or GarageBand for $14.99 apiece, and Pages, Keynote and Numbers for $19.99 each. In other words, you save money and aren't forced to buy bundled apps you don't want or need.

Apple's Aperture photo management app is another example. It's $199 for a copy in a box but $79.99 when you download it from the Mac App Store.

A boxed copy of Final Draft that lists for $299.99 is $170.19 at Amazon's Mac Software Store.

Finally, Microsoft Office 2011 Home & Student Edition is $149.99 in a box but $117.28 at the Amazon Mac Software Store.
