Palm Springs ShortFest Wraps Sunday Night

The Palm Springs International ShortFest will wrap up tonight with its awards program.

The festival, now in its 17th year, has been running at Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs since Monday.

The awards program, set for 6 p.m., will feaure winners of audience and jury awards. A new documentary on artists around the world called "A Work of Persol" also will be shown.

The top movies from the festival will be shown once more on Monday at several locations in Palm Springs. The "Best of the Fest" lineup will be announced today, with those films being screen at the Ace Hotel, Mojave Learning Center and Camelot Theatres.

Selected from more than 3,000 entries worldwide, a total of 331 short films were scheduled to be shown during the weeklong event. Of those shorts, 64 will be making their world premieres; 58 their North American premieres and 25 their United States premieres. The films were structured in 52 themed programs to be spaced out among the festival's seven days.

For the first time, the ShortFest included an online segment. Starting a week before the festival, 10 films have been streamed online and will be available throughout the event. During Sunday's closing night festivities, one will be presented with the ShortFest Online Audience Award.

"It's a watershed year for ShortFest, encompassing our first foray into the world of online short film streaming and an expanded lineup of international participants," said Darryl McDonald, the festival's director. "I'm particularly excited about the inclusion in our lineup of a wealth of striking new filmmaking talent emerging from the Middle East, South America and a number of Asian countries."

Several of the films scheduled to be shown at the festival include: "After-School Special" (USA), starring Sarah Paulson and Wes Bentley, "Animal Love" (USA) starring Selma Blair and Jeremy Davies and "In Loco Parentis" (Australia) starring Anthony LaPaglia.

The ShortFest jury will award a total of $118,800 in prizes and money to films in 18 categories. First-place winners in four of those classes will automatically become eligible for an Academy Award nomination.

The festival has shown 80 films that have gone on to receive Academy Award nominations, according to organizers .

Palm Springs Short Film Festival not short on big stars this year

His film, “In Loco Parentis,” will be screened in the Make 'Em Laugh program on opening night. Filmmaker Michael Jortner, who had his 16-minute short “Strip” screened at last year's festival, described ShortFest as a positive experience.

A Watershed Year for ShortFest | The Global Film Village

“It’s a watershed year for ShortFest,” said Festival Director Darryl Macdonald, “encompassing our first foray into the world of online short film streaming, and an expanded lineup of international participants.”

This year’s ShortFest will feature Academy Award winners and nominees, along with other film and television stars and studio executives.  Melissa Leo in the World Premiere of The Sea Is All I Know (Haiti) directed by David Darg .

“The extensive number of high-visibility talents showcased in this year’s ShortFest films provide vivid testament to the increasing vitality and viability of the short film art form” said Festival Director Darryl Macdonald. The Palm Springs International ShortFest and its Short Film Market are the largest and most prominent short film showcase in North America with 3,000 films being presented this year.

The inaugural  ShortFest Online Film Festival will feature ten films  that will play on a special section of the festival web site ( www.psfilmfest.org/shortfest ) starting a week prior to the festival with  Online voting for these films throughout the festival. The “ShortFest Online Audience Award” will be announced at the Festival Award Ceremony on Closing Night.  Several of the online films will also play during the festival proper, so that attending audiences may see them on the big screen.  The ShortFest Online Film Festival will continue to play online for two months after the end of the festival.

A total of $118,800 in prizes, including $14,000 in cash awards, will be given out in 18 categories to this year’s short films in competition. The  film selected as the Panavision Grand Jury Award winner will receive a digital or film camera package valued at $60,000.  First place winners in four categories will automatically become eligible for consideration by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) for a possible Academy Award nomination.  Over the course of its first 16 years, the Festival has presented 80 films that have gone on to receive Academy Award nominations.  Winners will be announced on Sunday, June 26 at a Closing Night screening and reception.
