The thermal energy content of coal is 6150 kWh/ton. That would make it 3.08 kWh per pound (assume short tons). And 0.19 kWh per ounce.
Wonder how many ounces of silicon it takes to produce 0.19 kw of solar panels? If we knew that then we could calculate the sheer embedded energy-gathering potential of solar panels as they produce power 4, 5, 6 hours per day over decade after decade after decade.
Work that one out and I suspect we’ll be less impressed with the energy storage ability of fossil fuels.
