Explosion at a petro-chemical plant - Houston Personal Injury ...

The Houston based Multi-Chem Corporation lost one of its facilities when a fire and ensuing explosion destroyed the plant last week. The Houston company blends and stores oilfield operation chemicals, though police officials were uncertain which chemicals caused the explosion .

Allegedly, the first blast took place at 4 p.m. and was followed by several others, forcing residents to evacuate. Smoke was also seen hundreds of feet in the air. The plant was located near the Gulf Coast in southern Louisiana.

An individual living near the plant who had been outside at the time of the blast described a large explosion during the incident and said that several smaller blasts occurred after. He told reporters that after the incident drops of liquid fell onto him, which then created a bitter taste in his mouth, he added. Police officials soon arrived at his home and told him to evacuate.

Others living within five miles of Multi-Chem were told to gather at an evacuation area and then housed in hotels for the night, said a Red Cross volunteer. The company allegedly paid all expenses.

Of course whenever there is a large scale fire or explosion at an industrial petrochemical operation there is a significant risk of serious injury or death. Fortunately there were no reports of serious injuries among the 20 employees who worked at the plant, and all were accounted for, according to police.

According to a Multi-Chem spokeswoman, the company was attempting to pinpoint what chemicals continued to burn in the two storage tanks involved. She said the company blends many chemicals which are used in the oilfield industry, and the blaze began in outdoor storage tanks.

Smoke could be seen for miles, but firefighters decided to allow the fire to burn out. Police on the scene later decreased the evacuation radius to one mile.
