Google Censors Piracy Terms on Auto-Complete
The search engine's auto-complete service, which helps fill in the blank when a person is typing in a word Google recognizes, no longer displays piracy-related sites like Mediafire, RapidShare and BitTorrent from the list of words subject to the auto-completion function.The goal, according to Google spokesperson Mistique Cano, is to prevent Google from guiding searchers to ripped-off material or terms that have been subject to valid DMCA takedown notices.
"While there is no silver bullet for infringement online, this measure is one of several that we have implemented to curb copyright infringement online," Cano said to TorrentFreak .
Google's efforts and their huge reach in the search business may indeed curb this activity if people aren't sure what they're looking for. But anyone who knows the rest of the word for the piracy-related site they seek can get there just fine, using Google or any other search method.
Plus, there's no guarantee Google is catching every term. Certain piracy-related terms are still subject to auto-complete, such as Mediafire's competitors Hotfile and Fileserve and BitTorrent competitor, Vuze. Picking and choosing who's deleted from auto-complete may just lead to one competitor getting an advantage over the other because it will be easier for searchers to find them.
Google initially resisted the move to take terms out of auto-complete after a French music rights organization asked the Mountain View, Calif.-based company to do so last year. They're somewhat unique in doing so, as search engines like Yahoo! are still resisting a change. Microsoft's new engine Bing is one of the few search engines to filter terms in a way similar to what Google is doing.
If they continue deleting terms and level the playing field, Google's efforts may make a dent in the battle over piracy. But as long as other search engines, and the sites themselves, exist, it's likely pirates will win this battle.
