Discourage those flying, hopping, biting bugs

Who wants to be outside in even the most beautiful yard if the bugs are out of control? And dousing ourselves with chemicals in order to "enjoy" the great outdoors sounds more like combat warfare than a peaceful afternoon communing with the natural world.

Is there a happy medium? Well, yes and no.

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is also a member of the mint family and has a pleasant scent. Lemon balm contains a citronella compound that keeps mosquitoes away. And, of course, citronella candles are always romantic for dinner al fresco and may help with the hungry mosquitoes, as well.

Marigolds -- those maintenance-free, bright, perky marigolds -- are said to keep a variety of pests away. No wonder -- the plants smell like skunk to me. Nevertheless, they are said to be a good companion planting when grown near tomatoes and other plants that rabbits tend to nibble. Be warned, though, marigolds may have an herbicidal effect on some beans and cabbages.

Mosquitoes, fleas, ticks and chiggers apparently don’t like the scent of rosemary (Rosemarinus officinalis). In our climate, rosemary cannot survive outside all year, but when planted in attractive pots, it winters indoors very nicely, will burst into beautiful tiny blue flowers from time to time and is a great cooking herb. You may even want to situate the plant near your pet’s bed.

Lavender (Lavendula augustifolia) deters moths and fleas, and it smells good. Hanging a bunch in the closet may keep your winter woolens safe.
