$39 million Sis and Herman Dupre Science Pavilion Dedicated
Nearly 500 Saint Vincent College alumni, friends, and representatives of foundations, corporations and other organizations witnessed the ceremonial dedication of the first phase of the $39 million, 110,000 square feet Sis and Herman Dupré Science Pavilion, a state-of-the-art educational facility that will provide classrooms, laboratories and offices for the Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Computing.
Remarks The dedication ceremony included remarks by Br. Norman W. Hipps, O.S.B., president, Archabbot Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B., chancellor, and the Rev. Paul R. Taylor, O.S.B., executive director of Saint Vincent Archabbey Educational Apostolates and Endowments.
Honoring the Dupré Family The ceremony also included a Ceremony of the Bells for the installation and ringing of 11 custom-made Swiss cow bells in the atrium – one for Mrs. Dupré, one for Mr. Dupré and one for each of their nine daughters – Denise, Laura, Rosi, Anni, Janeen, Heidi, Gretl, Michele and Reneé. The music of Edelweiss from The Sound of Music by Rogers and Hammerstein accompanied the ceremony. In their ancestral land, the sound of bells signals the safe return of the farmers’ cows from the mountains in the fall and the start of a celebration in the villages.
Planning Began in 2005 Planning for the construction began in January 2005 with the appointment of a Steering Committee by College President James F. Will. Subsequently, a consulting team from Project Kaleidoscope, a national reform initiative funded by the W.M. Keck Foundation, the National Science Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Education, was engaged to review the needs of the Boyer School regarding space for laboratories, classrooms, offices and all of the support functions required to continue Saint Vincent College’s long tradition of providing the highest quality educational programs in biology, physics, mathematics, chemistry and pre-professional preparation in the allied health sciences.
Completion Expected by 2012 The Sis and Herman Dupré Science Pavilion, when completed in 2012, will encompass 60,000 square feet of new construction and 50,000 square feet of renovated space. To allow for expanded hands-on learning opportunities, more than 60% of the space is dedicated to laboratories and laboratory support. The additional space will help meet the needs of an increasing number of students enrolling in the sciences at Saint Vincent. Enrollment in the school grew by 30 percent in recent years. The architects, committed to responsible re-use of the existing structures wherever possible, designed the new construction to complement and coordinate with the materials and design in a pleasing architectural plan that, like the rest of the Saint Vincent campus, blends new and old harmoniously. Now that the Phase I construction is completed, workmen have turned to the renovation of the ancillary buildings that, when completed, will become one comprehensive educational facility.
