Republicans and climate change (6)

While many past Republican presidents have clearly left us with huge environmental benefits, it is hard to imagine any of the current crop of candidates, vying to become the party's nominee, will ever be described as "pro-environment" or "green," even if they once clearly were.

Sarah Palin, for example. While it is not yet clear if she will run for president in 2012, Sarah Palin is a constant presence on the news each evening because she keeps teasing that she might.

According to Mother Jones , Palin was in favor of doing something about human-caused climate change before she was against it.

"In an email exchange from July 2007, Palin discussed global warming with her brother, Chuck Heath Jr., who was taking part in a climate change study program for science teachers at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and the state's environment commissioner. Heath wrote:

"Sarah, I'm just about done with my 80 hour course on global climate change. Most of it has been focused on coastal erosion which is probably a bigger deal than you're aware of ... I have met some of the top scientists in the world on the subject and if you'd like, I can organize another advisory task force (which would include scientists, economists, citizens who live in these areas) who can give recommendations to the state. The problem is accelerating quickly so it would be good to get a handle on it now.

"Palin forwarded the message to Lawrence Hartig, the commissioner of the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. She mentioned her hope that the state is 'really getting serious about dealing with climate change impacts.' She added: 'I'm getting more and more enthused about digging into the subject and working on it.'"

In July of 2008, Palin had this to say about global warming:

Alaska's climate is warming. While there have been warming and cooling trends before, climatologists tell us that the current rate of warming is unprecedented within the time of human civilization. Many experts predict that Alaska, along with our northern latitude neighbors, will warm at a faster pace than any other areas, and the warming will continue for decades."

In response to this concern, as governor of Alaska, Palin "created a subcabinet group to look at 'carbon-trading markets' and examine 'the expanded use of alternative fuels, energy conservation, energy efficiency, renewable energy.

Annalee Newitz — When you hear predictions about climate change, scientists often refer to simple models of gradual transformation. But new evidence suggests that climate change is likely to be abrupt, with the temperature of the planet rising quickly

And so with climate change. What Virginia does may be inconsequential in the grand scheme--but not to Virginians who stand to face its at-hand consequences in their own state. Why not at least keep the climate commission on standby alert?

Impact of Climate Change and its Impact on Forest Resource at ...

Forestry Nepal: This assessment report assesses the nature and type of climate change impacts on forests in general and forest in Nepal, by reviewing available literature and compiling the observations. A key conclusion coming out of this review is that climate change is not only an issue of international concern but is now a local problem in Nepal. People in the plains and the hills have observed unexpected changes in their weather, water and environment. Reduced rainfall and water supply, upward shifting of certain plant species and increased incidence of diseases on crops are major issues commonly raised by respondents. These perceptions of climate change and associated impacts are in line with the expected ecological impact from a scientific point of view.

It also aims to assist policy makers and forest planners to reduce the vulnerability of the sector to climatic changes. It will contribute to the effects of climate change, to enhance the protection of forests against, among others, forest fires, and to maintain and enhance the protective functions of forests against the increasing threat of extreme weather events as well as erosion and desertification problems. Since forests are important components of the livelihoods system for over two-thirds of the population of Nepal, they can offer an important basis for creating and safeguarding more climate-resilient livelihoods. About Climate Himalaya Initiative An initiative started by a voluntary environment group in 2010, focuses on ‘Climate Change Adaptation in Himalayan Mountains’ through Information Sharing, Knowledge Networking and Engagement of Potential Leaders. It works on in four cross cutting thematic areas of Ecosystems, Water, Forest and Livelihood. At present Climate Himalaya team works on knowledge networking and Partnership outreach activities. We are looking forward to join hands with interested people and organizations beyond this point. Kindly drop a line at: info@climatehimalaya.net

By recognizing various climatic changes and their impacts in Himalayan Mountains a group of people and organizations proposed a collaborative initiative called 'Climate Himalaya Initiative'. The initiative focuses on Climatic Adaptation in Himalayan region through-Awareness Generation, Knowledge Networking, Capacity Building and Environmental Governance by covering four major thematic areas of Ecosystems, Water, Forest and Livelihood. At present we focus on knowledge networking and outreach activities and look for interested partners to join hand. Drop a line at: info@climatehimalaya.
